South African Airways (SAA) has unveiled its plans for ist Airbus A350. The airline will deploy the A350s on the long-haul flights that were operated by the airline prior to the pandemic. The flights will commence in two phases, serving four continents. In the first phase, SAA will use its leased Airbus A330-300 aircraft for long-haul flights to São Paulo Guarulhos International to Perth International Airport by the end of March 2023.
In the second phase, the national carrier will resume flights with the A350s to Frankfurt Airport, London Heathrow, Washington Dulles, and John F. Kennedy Airport.
Apart from resuming the long-haul routes, the airline will also add schedules to coastal regions in South Africa, including Cape Town-Durban, Johannesburg-George, and Johannesburg-Gqeberha.
The airline resumed operations in September 2021 after coming out of voluntary business rescue with a reduced fleet of six aircraft. The airline resumed operation with regional flights to Ghana, DRC, Zambia, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe. The airline has re-introduced flights to Namibia and Mauritius and is set to resume flights to Lilongwe, Malawi
It previously served over 34 international destinations from its hub at OR Tambo International Airport.
Just last month, the SA's National Treasury reported that SAA was no longer technically insolvent.
