Schiphol aims to curb night flying and ban private jets

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport has proposed a ban on private jets and an end to flying between midnight and 5am.

The airport's management said it wants "quieter, cleaner and better aviation" and ruled out the addition of a runway, saying the it would ask the Dutch government to revoke the reservation made for the land needed.

"Private jets and the noisiest aircraft will no longer be welcome," the airport said in a statement announcing the proposals, in which it added that it wanted no more take-offs  between midnight and 6am and no flights landing between midnight and 5am.

"We need to be sustainable for our employees, the local environment and the world. I realise that our choices may have significant implications for the aviation industry, but they are necessary," said Ruud Sondag, chief executive of Royal Schiphol Group.
