Will the new Mexican state carrier launch by December 2023?

The new Mexican state carrier is set to launch operations on December 1, according to the country’s president Andrés Manuel López Obrador. The President confirmed that the government is all set to acquire the brand and assets of former carrier Mexicana de Aviación that ceased operation in August 2010

The President also revealed that the brand acquisition was facing some blocks due to which the government might rename the project as ‘Aerolínea Maya’. The new startup will be run by Mexico’s National Defense Secretariat and will be based at the new Felipe Ángeles International Airport (NLU).

The brand acquisition will cost the government about one billion Mexican pesos which will be distributed between the former employees of the bankrupt company.

After the airline Mexicana de Aviación went banckrupt, the employees knocked on the court to receive their dues.

Meanwhile, experts believe that it might take a long time to launch the new start-up with the finalisation of fleet, workforce, crew, route map, airports etc. Although Boeing has confirmed its participation in collaborating with the Mexicana de Aviación project but there is no clarification on the new or used planes delivery.

However, López Obrador’s presidential term ends in 2024, so it is in his best interest to launch the airline before his time in office ends.
