United CEO addresses safety concerns in customer email
United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby has addressed safety concerns in an email sent out to its Mileage Plus members. It follows a spat of issues in the previous weeks making the rounds in headlines, including a missing panel on a 737-800 and a tyre falling off after takeoff on a 777-200 aircraft. Kirby noted the incidents as ""reminders of the importance of safety"" and that while ""unrelated"" to each other, Kirby said: ""These incidents have our attention and have sharpened our focus."" He added that United is reviewing the incidents and will use the information in its safety training and procedures. It will be in addition to pre-established changes such as an extra day of training for all pilots in May as well as a centralised training curriculum for new-hire maintenance technicians. United is also dedicating more resources to its supplier network management. Kirby said: ""We empower our team to speak up and raise their hand if they see something wrong."" He added that United is building up a ""new culture"" that ""puts safety first"". It follows recent accusations from the FAA regarding Boeing's ""inadequate and confusing"" safety culture.
