San Antonio International Airport receives $13.3 million FAA grant

San Antonio International Airport has received a $13.3 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), as part of an investment program set up by the government agency.

The Texas airport will receive the federal funding to support key elements of its new terminal, as it enters the fourth phase of construction. The terminal will feature 17 new domestic and international gates and more than 850,000 square feet of terminal space.

This investment will be delivered to the airport as part of the ‘Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act’, which will provide $14.5bn in funding over five years to American airports. This includes up to $2.39bn for primary airports and up to $500 million for nonprimary airports.

"This federal investment is an important win for San Antonio,” said Erik Walsh, city manager of San Antonio. “It strengthens our airport infrastructure, creates local jobs and ensures that the airport will continue to meet the growing needs of our city. The improvements under way at SAT are vital to the future of our region and will benefit generations of travellers.”

An estimated 16,000 jobs will be created over the lifespan of the terminal development, with the aim of supporting workforce development across a range of industries.

Over the full course of the project, the terminal development is expected to have a $2.8bn-dollar economic impact.
