Malaysia Airlines sends its sixth and last A380 into storage

Malaysia Airlines has put its sixth and last A380 in storage at Tarbes-Lourdes-Pyrénées Airport in France, where all the six aircraft will remain in storage till further notice.

Prior to the pandemic, Malaysia Airlines had deployed its A380 on long haul routes to Europe, Australasia and Asia from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL). During peak times, the airline operated twice daily flights from Kuala Lumpur and London Heathrow. However, the airline grounded its fleet at the start of the pandemic, where they were stored at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport until November 2022.

Since November 2022, the airline began transferring the aircraft for permanent storage to Tarbes-Lourdes-Pyrénées Airport in France.

In July 2021, the airline had decided to sell the A380s post the fleet restructuring plans, however it never materialized.

Going ahead, the airline has ordered 20 Airbus A330neos to replace the aging A330-200s. According to sources, the airline plans to trade the A380s for this deal. The airline is also awaiting the delivery of another 50 737 Max aircraft.

Following the departure of the Airbus A380, Malaysia Airlines’ fleet now consists of six Airbus A330-200s, 15 Airbus A330-300s, six Airbus A350-900s, and 43 Boeing 737-800s.
