Istanbul Airport ended 2024 with greenhouse gas emissions 10.5% below projections and announced an ambitious increase in its 2030 renewable energy target, as part of ongoing efforts to reach net zero emissions across ground operations by 2050.
In its 2024 Sustainability Report, the airport reported a 1.4% decrease in emissions on the prior year and confirmed it will now aim to source 90% of its energy from renewable sources by 2030, up from a previous target of 50%.
The report, prepared using a double materiality analysis to assess both environmental impact and financial relevance, outlines key developments in the airport’s ESG strategy.
As part of its decarbonisation roadmap, the airport is currently developing a €212 million solar power plant in Eskişehir.
Spanning 3 million square metres, the facility will have a planned capacity of 199.32 megawatts and is expected to generate 340 million kilowatt-hours annually.
Once operational in the fourth quarter of 2025, the airport said it will become the first major global hub to meet 100% of its electricity needs through solar power.
