Indian Airlines will cease to exist this weekend and all its flights will be transferred to the unified Air India or AI code. The two airlines were merged by the government in August 2007 but integrating the two is proving challenging mainly because of the Rs. 40,000 crore in debt as well as the dispute with 800 Indian Airlines pilots, who say they should be paid as much as Air India pilots.
Within a day of receiving a warning from the Indian Airline pilots, Air India has issued a formal statement, promising, "We will look into the issues raised by the pilots.
