Heathrow Airport has called upon the UK government to provide vital support to kick start a thriving UK Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) industry, which will deliver jobs and economic growth, and position the UK as a world leader in this fast-growing sector.
In a statement the airport management has urged the UK government to seize the opportunity to support the UK Sustainable Aviation Fuel industry by backing the Grayling/Courts amendment and ensuring price stability in the SAF market. Former Transport Secretary Chris Grayling MP and former Aviation Minister Robert Courts MP will table this amendment in Parliament.
“The government can unlock the immense potential of domestic SAF production, creating jobs, fuelling economic growth, and solidifying the UK's position as a leader in sustainable aviation,” the statement reads.
The airport has also warned the UK government that without its support in in ensuring a realistic and stable market for SAF, the UK risks losing ground to the United States and Europe, where significant investments and incentives have already been introduced.
Going ahead, the airport believes that the government should match the scale of ambition seen in the US and Europe when it comes to supporting the UK SAF industry. “Taking credible action now is crucial to establish a strong foundation for the future. By doing so, the UK can become a global leader in sustainable aviation, just as it has in offshore wind,” the statement adds.
The UK government has committed to mandate 10% SAF usage by 2030, however the current trajectory suggests that the UK may become reliant on imports unless further efforts are made to unlock private investments in domestic SAF production.
The airport has further urged the government to apply a collaborative approach, with the government providing incentives and a supportive regulatory framework, will attract producers to build their SAF plants in the UK, creating a thriving industry that contributes to job creation, energy security, and a cleaner aviation sector.
