Cirium's July OTP report shows impact of CrowdStrike disruption
Cirium has released its on-time performance (OTP) report for airlines and airports during the month July this year. Data from the month shows that many airlines and airports were affected by the July 19, global IT outage stemming from a CrowdStrike and Microsoft software update error. The disruption caused by the global outage resulted in over 5,000 cancelled flights worldwide with thousands more delayed between July 19 -21. The data shows that airlines and airports across North America, Europe and the Asia/Pacific region – heavily dependent on Microsoft systems – saw the most disruption during the period. Meanwhile, Latin America and the Middle East & Africa experienced minimal impact. Looking specifically at airline on time performance, Saudia retained its position as the global leader with an OTP of 88.15% - a slight decrease from last months performance of 88.2%. The remaining top five spots were filled by Azul, LATAM Airlines, Avianca and Aeromexico. Regionally around the world the Asia/Pacific region saw the lowest number of cancellations, recording 26,980. JAL came out as the leader in the region with an OTP of 81.24%. Meanwhile in North America, the region saw the highest number of cancelled flights anywhere in the world increasing by 98% in comparison to the month prior to 23,393. Alaska Airlines came out on top in the North America region with an OTP of 77.51%. Now taking a look at airports around the world, Bogota El Dorado International Airport (BOG) came out on top when looking at global airport OTP with 84.45% of flights departing on time from the Colombian airport. The remaining top five spots were taken by Lima Jorge Chavez International Airport (LIM), Riyadh King Khalid International Airport (RUH), Sao Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport (GRU) and Santiago Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport (SCL). The data shows that from global airports – airports that serve at least three global regions and have the capacity for 25-40 million seats – saw 498,300 flights depart with 73.7% being on-time.
