Farnborough Airport has secured a deal with Hydrogen Refinery for 12.5 million litres or 10,000 tonnes per annum of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), which is produced locally from waste.
Hydrogen Refinery produces carbon-negative SAF from a variety of mixed waste materials, including landfill and food waste.
“This partnership positions us to become the first airport in the world to offer a 20% SAF blend across all our operations by 2028, ahead of the UK’s 10% target for 2030,” commented Simon Geere, CEO of Farnborough Airport.
Geere also stated that this aligns with the airports ambition to lead in sustainable aviation and SAF production.
This comes after both the UK and the European Union (EU) have introduced legislation-backed mandates on both the amount of SAF that must be used from January 2025 and also the way that SAF must be produced in the future.
Farnborough has already sold over two million litres of SAF since 2021.
