Brussels says "all options on the table" after losing state aid case to Ryanair

European Commission executive vice-president Margrethe Vestager said the body "will carefully study" the May 10 judgement by the EU General Court annulling Brussels' approval of over €7bn in pandemic state aid given to Lufthansa and Scandinavian Airlines (SAS).

"We are aware of the uncertainty the judg[e]ments generate for the airlines concerned and the aviation sector at large. While it is too early to give any indication as to what the appropriate course of action may be, at this stage all options are on the table," said Vestager.

Vestager said the Commission believes the May 10 ruling, which was in response to a case taken by Irish carrier Ryanair, would not affect the restructuring of SAS.

The Commission "is in close and constructive contact with the Danish and Swedish authorities on the state aid implications of the ongoing restructuring of SAS," Vestager said.
