The black box from Azerbaijan Airlines flight 8243, which crashed near Aktau, Kazakhstan on December 25, 2024, has been sent to Brazil for investigation.
The flight, which was travelling between Baku and Grozny, Russia, deviated from its course, ultimately crash-landing in a field near the city Aktau. The exact cause of the crash remains unclear.
Azerbaijan claims that the Embraer E190 aircraft was struck by a Russian missile near Grozny and that it was denied permission for emergency landings at two Russian airports before eventually crashing.
On board were 67 people, including 42 Azerbaijani citizens, 16 Russians, six Kazakhs, and three Kyrgyz nationals.
In a statement to Euronews, Kazakhstan's government explained that the decision to send the black box to Brazil was made after consultations with Azerbaijan and Russia.
"In accordance with the standards of Annex 13 of the Chicago Convention, the state conducting the investigation ensures the reading of flight recorders and decides on the selection of a country to read and decode the black boxes,” the government statement read.
The crash resulted in the loss of 38 lives.
