WOW launches cut price transatlantic fares

Low-cost, long-haul Icelandic start-up, WOW Air, has launched sales of cut price, one-way tickets from London Gatwick to Boston or Washington DC for £99.

The cut-price fares will be available for travel on selected dates between 1 October to 15 December 2015 and 10 January to 10 March 2016.

Flights depart from London Gatwick airport and have one stop over in Reykjavik, which adds just over an hour to the journey time.

There are additional costs, however. WOW charges a £6 booking fee per booking; one 5kg bag is free but to add an extra 7kg to your hand luggage bag costs an extra £28; checked-in luggage costs £39 per guest per flight leg for a bag weighing up to 20kg; two checked bags will cost £78 per passenger, and larger equipment is £36 per person per flight.

Reserving a seat in advance costs between £3 and £11 per passenger per flight, with extra leg room seats costing between £19 and £39 per passenger per flight. In flight food and beverages are also an additional cost.

The estimated average cost of a return flight is approximately £300, which is still competitive.
