Wizz Air to receive Pratt & Whitney support amid aircraft groundings

Wizz Air has signed a commercial support agreement with Pratt & Whitney on December 31, 2024, to address the grounding of its A320neo family aircraft due to issues with its PW1100G-JM geared turbofan (GTF) engines.

The agreement is in relation to the continued grounding of aircraft, owing to powder metal issues in the PW1100G-JM GTF engines.

The Hungarian low-cost carrier is expecting that 40 of its A320neo family aircraft will continue to be grounded until the end of Wizz Air's fiscal year 2026, due to inspections required on its GTF fleet. The commercial support from Pratt & Whitney includes both operational support and a compensation package covering the company's direct costs associated with the aircraft that have been grounded or are expected to be grounded.

The airline does however expect to return to growth, by receiving 50 new A321neo deliveries by the end of the airline's fiscal year 2026 and expects to grow seat capacity by about 20%.

These additional latest technology aircraft will take the type's share of the airline’s fleet to 77%.
