Viva Aerobus sees double-digit traffic growth in January despite aircraft groundings

Mexican low-cost carrier Viva Aerobus carried 2.4 million passengers during January, an increase of 10.6% compared to January 2024.

This traffic growth was driven by an increase of 8.1% in domestic traffic and 31.8% in international traffic, respectively.

Juan Carlos Zuazua, CEO of Viva Aerobus, said that this double-digit increase in traffic reflects the airline’s ongoing efforts to "sustain operations" and "minimise disruptions" from Pratt & Whitney engine recalls. Viva Aerobus had some 25 aircraft grounded during 2024, due to overhauls of Pratt & Whitney’s engines.

During January, the airline grew its total capacity, measured in available seat miles (ASMs), by 9.2% compared to January 2024. This reflects an increase of 5.7% in domestic traffic and 25.5% in international traffic, respectively.

The airline's load factor for the month averaged at 85.4%.
