Vietjet Thailand takes delivery of first Boeing aircraft

Vietjet Thailand has received its first Boeing aircraft with the delivery of a 737 MAX 8.

This is part of its parent company's $32bn order for 200 of the aircraft type, with the parent receiving its first 737 MAX 8 in September 2025.

Vietjet Thailand will receive 50 of these aircraft. The Thai subsidiary will continue to receive deliveries of the Boeing narrowbody through 2028.

“The Boeing fleet is being invested specifically for Vietjet Thailand, while in Vietnam, the airline continues to operate its Airbus fleet,” Vietjet said.

The company initially ordered 100 737 MAX jets in 2016 and then doubled the order to 200 in 2018.

Vietjet recently finalised a firm order for 100 A321neos in late October, after signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in June at the Paris Air Show for 100 firm and 50 options. The deal was first reported by Airline Economics in April.

Additionally, the airline is in the final stages of entering a renewed COMAC wet leasing deal with Chengdu Airlines for two C909 aircraft, a person familiar with the matter told Airline Economics, with the aircraft expected to return to Vietjet's operations this month.

Last month, it was revealed that Vietjet would not renew its six-month leases for two COMAC C909 aircraft. The Chinese regional jets — formerly known as ARJ21 — were wet-leased from Chengdu Airlines since April 2025.

At the time, a person familiar with the deal had explained that the decision was driven by the airline's aim to transition into long-term dry leases, and that it has not withdrawn completely from the C909 programme. The source confirmed that the airline had had no technical issues with the aircraft type.
