The US Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) has released fuel cost and consumption data for US airlines during the month of June this year.
The data shows that scheduled service airlines used 1.68bn gallons of fuel during the month, an increase of 2.2% in comparison to May, and 4.2% higher in comparison to pre-pandemic June 2019.
The cost per gallon of fuel in June was $2.54, down 11 cents from the month prior, similarly total fuel expenditure for the month was also down by 2% to $4.27 billion from $4.36bn in May.
In comparison to the previous year, fuel consumption and cost for June 2024 includes a 4.4% increase in domestic fuel consumption, an 8.4% increase in domestic fuel cost and a 3.9% increase in cost per gallon.
This overall increase in fuel consumption for the month of June correlates to an increase in passenger travel over the same period.
