United Airlines said on March 31, 2025, that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has approved its first Starlink-equipped aircraft type, with the first commercial flight operating the system is planned for May.
The FAA issued a supplemental type certificate (STC) for the airline's Embraer 175 aircraft. United expects the first commercial flight to be onboard a United Express Embraer 175 service.
At the beginning of March, United noted that it had begun the installation of Space X’s Starlink Wi-Fi on its regional fleet of aircraft, expecting to integrate the technology to 40 regional aircraft every month. The airline also confirmed that its Starlink-equipped regional aircraft can expect Wi-Fi speeds up to 250 megabits per second (Mbps), which is 50 times faster than current regional aircraft speeds.
United will also work with Starlink to secure FAA approval to install Starlink on more than 16 United aircraft models.
