A United Airlines flight travelling between Los Angeles and Shanghai was forced to turn around on March 22, 2025, after the flights pilot discovered that they did not have their passport onboard.
Around one hour and 45 minutes into the 13-hour service across the Pacific, United Airlines flight 198 tuned back towards the US, diverting to San Francisco International Airport.
“We arranged for a new crew to take our customers to their destination that evening,” a United spokesperson said. "Customers were provided with meal vouchers and compensation.”
Following this diversion the aircraft departed San Francisco seven hours later at 21:01 local time, arriving in Shanghai six hours behind schedule, according to data from Flightradar24.
The flight, which was operated by a 787-9 aircraft, was carrying 257 passengers and 13 crew.
