United Airlines pauses pilot hiring in wake of Boeing production delays
United Airlines have slowed the hiring of new pilots in the wake of Boeing's production and certification delays, which continue to impact the aviation industry. In a memo sent to pilots, United had confirmed that it ""will slow the pace of pilot hires this year due to continued new aircraft certification and manufacturing delays at Boeing."" The airline had 80 MAX 10s on order to be contractually delivered in 2024 and the aircraft has yet to receive certification. Some experts had predicted that the MAX 10 would not receive certification this year. The memo said: ""We just won't grow as fast as we thought we would in 2024 due to continued delays at Boeing."" Though, it added: ""We continue to have a robust, highly qualified candidate pool and since we hire well in advance of our schedule needs, we are already on track to be staffed and trained for the spring and summer seasons."" Furthermore, in an 10K form filed by the company last week, it showed that the expected deliveries for 2024 fell short of the contractual deliveries. 19 737 MAX 9s were expected to be delivered in 2024 of the contracted 34. The airline expects 37 737 MAX 8s out of 43 contracted. Its contracted eight deliveries of 787 aircraft is also expected to be one short in 2024. The airline had also recently announced new non-stop flights to Marrakesh, Morocco, Cebu, and to Medellin, Colombia for the first time. It is also increasing flight frequencies to Portugal, Hong Kong, and South Korea.
