Uganda Airlines recently ramped its capacity on the Entebbe-Johannesburg route with a fifth weekly service to serve the growing passenger demand and easing of pandemic restrictions. The airline will deploy with Bombardier CRJ900 every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday and Airbus A330 every Friday.
The airline said that the number of passengers flying between Entebbe and Johannesburg has increased by over 1000% compared to Q1 2022.
According to the data shared by the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA), the Entebbe airport reported 149,375 passengers in January 2023 compared to 110,547 passengers in January 2022. Of these, 72,934 passengers were flying into Uganda while 76,441 were departing, resulting in a daily average of 4,818 passengers in transit. The airport is currently undergoing robust expansion which upon completion will increase the current capacity of 2 million to at least 3.5 million by 2024.
The OR Tambo International Airport handled over 9.6 million passengers in FY 21-22 with about 6.7 million domestic passengers and 2.5 million international passengers.
The above figures give an estimate that both the airports, Entebbe and Johannesburg are significant hubs for passengers traveling to and from Africa.
