Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is planning to set up its first regional hub in Turkey in order present an expanded global network to better compete with Gulf-based carriers.
To this end, PIA has signed a memorandum of understanding with Turkish Airlines to expand its network to more than 130 destinations.
Gulf-based carriers were also interested in a similar deal with PIA, said Capt Haroon, PIA managing director in May 2008. He said Etihad Airways, Gulf Air and other Middle East airlines have expressed interest to expand cooperation with PIA.
PIA will continue its direct flights to Europe, the US and other key destinations in the West as Turkish Airlines will only take its New York and Chicago routes. PIA will continue to operate direct flights to other US cities, all over the United Kingdom, France, Oslo and other destinations, said Haroon.
