Turkish Airlines has resumed operations to Benghazi, Libya’s second largest city, following a ten-year hiatus.
The first flight operated by the Turkish flag carrier departed to the North African city from Istanbul on January 14, operated by its 737-800 aircraft.
Turkish initially launched flights to the city in 2009, ceasing operations in early 2015 due to security concerns.
“We are delighted to resume flights to Benghazi, where we share historical ties,” commented Bilal Ekşi, Turkish Airlines CEO. “We foresee that strong investments in the region will further boost the continent’s tourism and trade potential.”
Ekşi emphasised that in line with market conditions and increasing demand, the airline will “continue to diversify” gateways that connect Africa.
The Istanbul to Benghazi service will be operated three times weekly.
