Thai Airways has completed the operational aspects of its merger with subsidiary Thai Smile.
Within a filing on the Stock Exchange of Thailand, the carrier said that it had transferred all flight operations and services from Thai Smile to its parent company, Thai Airways, which holds 99.99% of Thai Smile's shares.
Two years ago in May 2023, Thai reported that it’s creditor’s committee gave the merger the go-ahead. At the time, the airline said that a merger would allow for better coordination of short-haul and long-haul flights at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok, higher capacity, improved utilisation, lower unit costs, and improved economies of scale.
Later in 2023, the first of Thai Smile's 20 A320 aircraft started to be transferred across to Thai Airways. By early 2024, Thai Smile had ceased all day-to-day operations.
After completing the fleet transfer, Thai CEO Chai Eamsiri stated that the 20 A320 aircraft, were now flying up to 10.5 hours per day - an increase from under nine hours that they were flying during their time with Thai Smile.
In this latest foiling, Thai stated that it had decided to proceed with legally dissolving Thai Smile, following a meeting of administrators held on May 8, 2025.
