TCAA- Passenger traffic in Tanzania crosses pre-pandemic mark in 2022

Tanzania has reported a strong recovery in terms of both passenger as well as freighter traffic as per the report revealed by the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA) for 2022. The report showed strong recovery in the cargo segment as the cargo handled last year surpassed pre-pandemic levels by 32% to reach 35,130 tonnes as compared to 30,974 tonnes of cargo handled in 2021.

TCAA data showed that passenger traffic in 2022 surpassed pre-pandemic levels by 2% to reach 5.7 million as compared to 2021 which saw 3.8 million passengers.

However, the aircraft movement at Tanzanian airports is still 15.4% below pre-pandemic levels, as per TCAA data. The aircraft movement in 2022 increased by 28.5% to 19,115 compared to the previous year.

Going ahead, TCAA is hopeful of a robust rise in passenger and cargo traffic in Tanzania with new airlines planning to fly to Tanzania and Air Tanzania’s plans of fleet expansion. The airline expects to add four new aircraft to its fleet of 12 by the end of 2023. The airline is also awaiting the delivery of its first Boeing 767-300F that was supposed to be delivered by the Q1 of 2023.
