Taiwan has revived plans to transform Taoyuan International Airport into a regional aviation centre to benefit from improving ties with China and the rise of budget airlines in the region.
The new aviation centre is expected to attract more than $16 billion in investment and will cover 7,000 hectares, a free trade zone, as well as a third airport terminal and an industrial park.
A third runway for the airport is already scheduled for completion by 2020 and will help it to triple its annual cargo handling capacity to 4.5 million tonnes by 2030, up from 1.7 million tonnes last year, and passenger capacity double to 60 million visits from now.
