SunExpress to equip entire 737-800 fleet with VCT finlets to reduce carbon footprint

Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines joint venture SunExpress will outfit its entire fleet of next generation 737-800 aircraft with VCT finlets, developed by Vortex Control Technologies (VCT), to deliver fuel savings and reduce carbon footprint.

The company said it decided to add the technology after a successful in-service evaluation.

The finlets are an array of small, aerodynamic fins placed on the aft fuselage of the aircraft. These fins modify airflow and reduce drag, resulting in the improved fuel efficiency.

The first phase of the programme began in May 2024, with five SunExpress aircraft equipped and evaluated in active service. The company said after “proven results”, the second phase is now launching with it installing the technology on over 40 additional aircraft in its fleet in the coming years.
