Spanish competition watchdog, Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia (CNMC), has stated that airport operator Aena's fees for 2025 will be unchanged.
The competition watchdog made the announcement on December 5, 2024, rejecting the company's bid for an increase in its fees.
Airports charge airlines fees for services including the use of runways, terminals, security and baggage handling. The fees subsequently place an impact on passenger ticket prices.
Carriers such as Ryanair have welcomed the CNMC's decision to freeze fees at Aena’s airports, but the Irish airline’s chief commercial officer, Jason McGuinness believes that this most recent action does not go far enough.
“Ryanair calls on the CNMC to take today's decision a step further and cancel AENA's rate hikes for 2023 and 2024, which, like its 2025 rate hike plans, were in breach of the Spanish government's rate freeze for 2021," McGuiness noted.
The CNMC said the adjusted annual maximum revenue per passenger would stay at €10.35 ($10.90).
