Germany’s Lufthansa airline group is reportedly in talks to take a minority stake in Spain's Air Europa, according to a report from Spanish media outlet el Economista.
The Hidalgo family, which owns 80% of the company's capital through its Globalia corporation, had supposedly been in previous talks with Air France-KLM to acquire a fifth of the airline's shareholding.
But within to a new report from el Economista, as of January 28, 2025, discussions involving Javier Hidalgo, Air France-KLM, and the Lufthansa Group appear to be “leaning towards the German side”, according to several sources.
This news follows the recent acquisition of a 41% stake in ITA Airways by the Lufthansa Group, closing a €325 million ($338.8 million) transaction on January 17, 2025. The Italian airline is now officially part of the Lufthansa Group, becoming it's fifth network airline.
Discussions with Air Europa are surrounding Lufthansa acquiring a 20% stake in the airline.
