Spanish renewable energy firm Solarig is set to construct a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production facility in Teruel, Spain.

The "Turboleta SAF" project will have an annual production capacity exceeding 75,000 tons of SAF, equivalent to powering approximately 33,000 flights between Zaragoza and London using a 50% SAF blend.

The €1.15 billion ($1.21 billion) investment includes renewable energy infrastructure directly linked to the plant, such as a dedicated wind farm and a battery energy storage system.

“This new facility positions Teruel as a leader in sustainable fuel production,” said Solarig chairman and CEO Miguel Ángel Calleja. “Leveraging the region’s abundant natural resources such as sun, wind and water along with biogas and biogenic CO2 derived from local agro-livestock waste, the project underscores our commitment to environmental stewardship.”

The project is supported by public entities across local, regional, and national levels, alongside leading aviation industry players. It also forms part of Solarig’s broader Spanish SAF portfolio, which collectively exceeds 400,000 tons of annual production.

To bolster financial backing, Solarig has submitted Turboleta SAF to Spain’s incentive program for renewable hydrogen production and consumption projects, facilitated by the institute for diversification and energy saving (IDAE) and funded through the EU’s next generation funds. The initiative aligns with European climate objectives, promoting large-scale adoption of renewable hydrogen and its derivatives.

Turboleta SAF complements Solarig’s “Numantia SAF” initiative and other ongoing SAF projects across Spain. Covering 10 hectares, the Teruel facility is expected to be operational by 2030.
