Spring begins in the northern hemisphere this week but nevertheless the east coast of the US has been hit by a freezing snowstorm, which so far has led to the cancellation of 5,432 flights today, according to FlightAware statistics. Over 80% of flights to/from New York and Boston are cancelled and half of flights to/from Washington and Philadelphia are cancelled today. This is in addition to the 1,658 flights cancelled yesterday. Chicago was most impacted with nearly a third of scheduled flights not operating on Monday. Cancellations are expected to be announced for tomorrow as well.
Meanwhile, due to lower than expected demand and stiff competition, Silver Airways is cancelling flights to Cuba from Fort Lauderdale from April 22. The airline has been operating 22 flights per week to nine smaller Cuban destinations, including Santa Clara, Holguín and Cayo Coco. American Airlines and JetBlue have also cut capacity on flights to Cuba, while Frontier Airlines will cease its daily flight to Havana from Miami on June 4. This is all despite traffic to Cuba from the US growing – it rose by 125% in January compared to the year-ago period.
