SAS latest carrier to report big y/y traffic jump in January 2022

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) carried 1.4 million passengers in January 2022, a near-90% jump compared to the same period in 2021.

Passenger demand "continued to be strong", the carrier said, increasing by 68% as capacity increased by 22% compared to the same period last year. SAS gave a "flown load factor" for the month of 68%.

“January traffic came in at 1.4 million passengers, an 89 percent increase compared to January 2022. It is a healthy figure during the winter season when we, due to our usual seasonality, see lower passenger numbers. We continue to make progress with SAS FORWARD and our chapter 11 process in the U.S. We recently concluded our aircraft lessor negotiations, and we expect to achieve our targeted cost reductions related to annual aircraft lease and financing costs,” says Anko van der Werff, SAS president and chief executive.

The SAS announcement came after carriers such as Norwegian and Ryanair reported hefty jumps in traffic for January 2022 compared to a year before.
