San Antonio International Airport starts construction on new $1.2bn terminal

San Antonio International Airport has begun the construction of a new $1.2bn terminal, which is intended to increase the airport’s overall capacity.

The construction of the new terminal is part of the airport’s terminal development program (TDP), which will aim to guide the future development of the airport over the next 20 years.  The TDP is part of a wider initiative, Elevate/SAT, a $2.5bn project aimed at enhancing and modernising the airport as a whole.

The new terminal will comprise of up to 17 gates, more than 800,000 square feet of new terminal space and 35,700 square feet of concessions space.

Jesus Saenz, IAP, director of airports, noted that the airport is continuing to see “record breaking growth” each month and that the new terminal will help accommodate the airports need to expand its facilities.

More than ten million passengers fly in and out of the airport each year, an average of 27,000 per day.

“This new terminal will ensure we meet the needs of passengers, businesses and partners from San Antonio and around the world,” he added.

The airport anticipates that the economic impact of the TDP is estimated to be $2.8 billion and it is expected to generate more than 16,000 new jobs.
