Ryanair flight gets military escorts amid bomb scare

Fighter jets escorted a Ryanair aircraft after pilots reported a bomb threat while en route from Poland to Greece on January 22.

While the scare proved to be a false alarm after Greek police searched the aircraft and luggage upon landing in Athens, the all-clear was only given after a pair of F-16s were scrambled to fly alongside the jet as it entered the Mediterranean nation's airspace

Hungary's air force had earlier escorted the aircraft after pilots alerted authorities of a possible bomb onboard. The flight was operated by Ryanair's Polish subsidiary Buzz and was carrying 190 passengers.

"Crew onboard flight FR6385 travelling from Katowice to Athens were notified of a potential security threat onboard and in line with safety procedures, continued to Athens where it landed safely before being met by the Greek authorities. Passengers disembarked normally while local authorities carry out an additional security check before clearing the aircraft to return to service," Ryanair said in a statement.
