The runway 05/23 at Hamburg Airport will be undergoing maintenance throughout the upcoming weeks and is scheduled to close on May 30, 2023. The maintenance work is expected to take around a month during which a new top layer will be added.
During this period, all flights will take off via runway 15/33, and passengers should anticipate service delays, the airport announced.
In a statement about the project, Martin Borstelmann, the chief civil engineer, said: “The top surface layer of our runways has to be renewed at certain intervals. In this way, the runways remain safely usable for flight operations, this has top priority at Hamburg Airport.”
THe maintenance is will take place outside of the peak summer travel season, which will allow for fewer delays at the airport. Additionally, the engineering team has secured approval to work at night, allowing for round-the-clock effort on the 05/23 runway.
After the conclusion of the peak summer travel season, the airport will undergo same resurfacing process for runway 15/33. The runway will close down on August 30 and is scheduled to reopen again on September 28.
