Qatar Airways is to resume operations to Syria after a 13-year hiatus.

The airline has cited a commitment to “fostering regional connectivity” while “supporting passenger demand” as reasons for the resumption of the operations to the country.

Qatar suspended operations to Syria in 2011, following the breakout of the Syrian Civil War.

Qatar Airways Group chief executive officer, Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, commented: “We are pleased to resume flights to Damascus, a destination of great historical and cultural importance. This announcement underscores our dedication to fostering connectivity and facilitating travel for our passengers.”

The Doha-based carrier also emphasised that it is working closely with “relevant authorities” to ensure that all necessary safety, security, and operational standards are met ahead of the relaunch of its service to the Syrian capital.

The service will operate three times weekly and will be operated by Qatar’s A330-200 aircraft.
