Canadian regional carrier Porter Airlines has revealed expansion plans based on its order for CSeries aircraft, although this is conditional on its Toronto hub changing its policy on the operation of commercial jets.
The Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport will need to extend its runway by 168 meters (551 feet) in each direction into Lake Ontario to be able to accommodate the CSeries aircraft.
The federal government's Transport Canada said it has not been approached by the city or the port authority, nor has it received a request to amend the airport agreement. Any motion to extend the runway will certainly take longer than the six months predicted by the airline and could lead to protests from local landowners and residents.
Porter's order for 12 CSeries jets is valued at $870 million at list prices, with options for another 18 aircraft with delivery expected from 2016.
