Philippine Airlines Boeing 777-300ER makes emergency landing following engine failure

An engine failure forced a Philippine Airlines Boeing 777-300ER to perform an emergency landing.

Shortly after takeoff passengers witnessed loud bangs and flames coming out of the engine #2 of the aircraft, which was flying from Los Angeles to Manila.

No injuries were reported among the 342 passengers and 18 crew members on board with the issue appearing to be compressor stalls.

“We greatly appreciate the calmness and patience of our PR113 passengers, who cooperated well with our cabin crew during the flight and the emergency landing,” said Philippine Airlines in a statement, adding that the airline is “fully cooperating with the concerned airport and aviation authorities.”

The Boeing 777 is powered by two GE90-115B engines. The engine manufacturer GE Aviation told the Associated Press it was aware of the incident and was “working with the airline to determine the cause of the event and to promptly return the aircraft to service.”
