Passenger traffic at German airports fails to reach pre-pandemic numbers
Figures from the first half of the year show that at German airports passenger traffic has not yet reached pre-pandemic levels, according to ADV statisticians.  The data shows that almost 11.5 million passengers travelled on domestic flights within Germany which is 50.7% fewer than before the pandemic. Similarly In European traffic, almost 65.9 million passengers travelled to and from German airports – 88.8% of the pre-pandemic figure. A total of almost 19.3 million passengers also travelled on intercontinental services which equates to 93.4% before the pandemic. Looking at figures comparing this year to last, from January to June of this year a total of 96.7 million passengers were handled at Germany’s 28 most important airports. This was a 10.2% increase in comparison to the same period of the previous year. German hub airports Frankfurt and Munich led the rankings in all traffic segments. They were always followed – with one exception – by Berlin Airport (BER). Düsseldorf was only able to outperform the German capital’s airport in terms of long-haul flights. A total of 1.1 million passengers travelled to and from Düsseldorf in this traffic segment, while 910,000 passengers travelled to and from BER. The airport with the biggest increase in passengers compared to 2023 levels was Münster/Osnabrück airport (FMO). The airport handled 535,000 passengers during the first half of this year an increase of 35.2%.
