Passenger demand reached record levels in 2024, according to the International Air Transport Association's (IATA) full year report, published January 30, 2025.
According to IATA, total revenue passenger kilometres (RPKs) in 2024 increased by 10.4% compared to 2023, exceeding 2019 figures by 3.8%. Total capacity rose by 8.7%, while the overall load factor reached a record 83.5%.
International travel saw the most significant growth, with full-year traffic rising 13.6% year-on-year, accompanied by a 12.8% increase in capacity. Meanwhile, domestic travel also showed steady expansion, with a 5.7% increase in demand and a 2.5% rise in capacity.
December 2024 capped the year with an especially strong performance. Demand for the month surged by 8.6% compared to December 2023, while capacity grew by 5.6%. International demand saw a notable rise of 10.6%, and domestic demand increased by 5.5%. The load factor for December stood at a record 84% for the month.
IATA’s director general, Willie Walsh said 2024 had made it “absolutely clear that people want to travel”.
