Norwegian has exercised an option to purchase 30 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, as the airline looks to expand its services across Europe.

The two parties have agreed to adjust the delivery dates related to the option, with the final aircraft in the order now scheduled for delivery in 2031.

The news follows a May 2022 announcement from Norwegian that it had agreed to purchase 50 Boeing 737 MAX 8, with an option to purchase 30 more.

In a statement, Norwegian said the expanded order will ensure an "efficient" and “balanced” renewal of its fleet, closely aligned with lease expiries and market developments.

“This milestone aircraft order is on attractive terms and secures our fleet growth in a way that supports our planned growth and sustainability targets,” said Geir Karlsen, CEO of Norwegian.

“By exercising the option and adjusting the delivery profile, we maintain flexibility while reinforcing our commitment to operating one of the most modern and fuel-efficient fleets in Europe.”

In 2024, Norwegian carried 22.6 million passengers and maintained a fleet of 86 Boeing 737-800 and 737 MAX 8 aircraft.

Since placing its first order for the Next-Generation 737-800 in 2007, Norwegian has predominantly operated Boeing single-aisle airplanes.

In 2017, it became the first European airline to take delivery of the 737 MAX, and the first airline to operate the 737-8 model on transatlantic routes between Europe and the US.
