New Canadian ULCC startup announced

Canada Jetlines is a Vancouver-based ultra-low cost startup that plans to launch during Spring 2015, and intends to price tickets up to 40% cheaper than competitors WestJet and Air Canada.

Canada Jetlines will commence operations with routes in Western Canada, although the airline has not stated where.

CEO and President David Solloway commented on the intended ultra-low cost business model, saying: “It’s a very strict business model. The whole focus is to provide safe, comfortable jet service to Canadians at the lowest possible price. Basically [the customer] will purchase a seat and seatbelt. Everything else, from luggage to snacks, comes at an additional charge.”

Critics in Canada have declared that there is insufficient demand to support another airline.

“If you’re asking the question whether Canada could have a third airline, the answer is no. But if you ask whether Canada can support an ultra-low cost, low fare airline, the answer is overwhelmingly yes,” Solloway said.
