MAS majority stakeholder considering privatisation after MH17

The government fund that owns a majority stake in Malaysia Airlines is increasingly favouring buying up the rest of the airline and privatising it to aid its recovery after the MH17 disaster.

Khazanah Nasional Bhd. is Malaysia's state investment fund and is a 69% stakeholder in MAS. Khazanah had already considered purchasing the rest of the company as part of a general restructuring of MAS in the wake of the MH370 disappearance.

The loss of MH17 caused MAS's stock price to collapse by 18%, favouring the case for privatisation. In total, MAS’s stock has fallen by 35% so far this year.

A plan for Khazanah Nasional to buy the rest of MAS's stock may be announced as soon as August.
