Malaysia Airlines has confirmed that the delivery of its first A330neo aircraft has been delayed.
The first aircraft delivery was originally expected in September of this year, the aircraft is now due to arrive with the airline in late November. This is due to findings identified by Airbus – the manufacturer of the A330neo aircraft – during the flight line stage.
“We are deeply disappointed by the aircraft delivery delays by Airbus, compounded by the ongoing setbacks of our Boeing 737-8 deliveries,” said Datuk Captain Izham Ismail, group managing director of the Malaysia Airlines Group.
He continued: “These delays are significantly disrupting our fleet modernisation plans and growth requirements. As we take decisive steps toward a stronger 2025, having the necessary assets in place is crucial to meet our growth targets, optimise our network and continue delivering enhanced services to our customers.”
As a result of this delay, Malaysia Airlines’ planned inaugural A330neo flight to Melbourne on November 25, 2024 - along with subsequent flights scheduled with the A330neo - will instead be operated by the airline’s A330-300 aircraft.
The airline is working closely with Airbus and its lessor – Avolon - to secure a new delivery timeline and expedite the aircraft’s entry into service. The airline expects to receive five A330neo aircraft by the first financial quarter of 2025.
