Lufthansa in SAF supply deal with energy company Varo

The Lufthansa Group and the energy company VARO have agreed a memorandum of understanding for the production and supply of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

The deal means VARO could supply the group's airlines with "large volumes of SAF from as early as 2026" and could also see the development of "green hydrogen" using biogenic waste materials.

Lufthansa said the deal furthers its goal "of driving forward the availability, market ramp-up and use of sustainable aviation fuels" and adds to its status as one of the biggest SAF users in Europe.

VARO aims to be producing around 260,000 tons of SAF per year by 2026.
