Lufthansa Cargo commences Frankfurt hub modernisations

Lufthansa Cargo is to invest a total of almost €500 million in the upgrade and modernisation of its Frankfurt cargo hub, including a new-build warehouse, following the formalisation of a signed contract with development partners.

Under the LCCevolution project, a 40-metre-tall high-bay warehouse in the north of Frankfurt Airport (benefitting from an automated transport system) will be joined by a upgraded ancillary network of buildings, spanning a total area of more than 70,000 square metres.

The construction and redevelopment plans will be implemented over the next seven years in accordance with construction partner Ed. Züblin of Frankfurt; described by Stefan Dürr, head of infrastructure program at Lufthansa Cargo as “an experienced expert in building construction and civil engineering who will support [the airline] with individual and customised solutions”.

With a throughput share of around 80 percent of Lufthansa Cargo’s total worldwide volume, the Frankfurt hub plays what CEO Ashwin Bhat calls a “decisive role” in the company’s success. This will also pose what chief operations officer Dietmar Focke describes as a “particular challenge of this project”, owing to the need to guarantee regular operation of the hub around the clock while upgraded elements are gradually introduced.
