Korean Air fined $5.5m over freight cartel

Korean Air Lines has received a $5.5m million fine from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission for its part in the alleged freight price-fixing cartel. Fines have now topped $50m, which includes the $20m fine paid by Qantas.

British Airways, Air France-KLM, Martinair and Cargolux have all received fines although action is still pending against Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Emirates, Air New Zealand, Malaysia Airlines and Thai Airways International, while proceedings against Garuda are the subject of a High Court appeal.

Korean admitted that it reached understandings with other airlines on fuel and security surcharges from May, 2003, to February, 2006. It did the same with custom fees from May, 2004 to October, 2005.
