JetBlue has begun the regular use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK), the first-ever regular supply of SAF in the region for commercial air travel.
This follows a 12-month agreement with World Fuel Services for at least one million gallons of SAF, supplied by Valero Energy's subsidiary, Valero Marketing.
The fuel is produced by Diamond Green Diesel and blended with conventional jet fuel, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional fuel. JetBlue’s corporate partners are covering the cost premium over regular jet fuel, with the potential for an additional four million gallons of SAF.
"JFK has been our home for 25 years, and this sets the standard for our entire network," said Ursula Hurley, JetBlue’s CFO.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which has worked to establish SAF delivery infrastructure, celebrated the milestone as part of efforts to promote sustainable air travel and reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
This development follows successful SAF tests at LaGuardia Airport and a historic transatlantic flight fuelled by SAF at JFK in late 2023.
