January passenger traffic tops 2019, says Spanish airport operator Aena

The Aena network of airports recorded 16.9 million passengers in January 2023, up 2.1% on the same month in 2019 and almost two-thirds more than in 2022.

Around 10.7 million of the January 2023 passengers travelled internationally, with 6.1 million flying domestically. Madrid-Barajas  was the busiest of Aena's airports, with 4.4 million passengers, with Barcelona-El Prat next on just over 3 million. Gran Canaria, Malaga and Tenerife reported around one million passengers each.

The operator said it recorded 156,500 aircraft movements during January 2022, when 74,547 tonnes of cargo were transported across the network, 96% of 2019 and 97% of 2022.

Aena did not compare the data to January 2020, the second-to-last month before the World Health Organization declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic and severe global travel restrictions were imposed.
